The German Throwdown is one of Europe's biggest races and this year was the 10th edition held in Meinz, Germany. Top athletes go to the competition and there was no shortage of them this year. The elite category featured names of athletes who have competed in the Semifinals or the Crossfit Games themselves (Jacqueline Dahlstørm, Moritz Fiebig and others)
For several months before the race, there was a qualifying process where only a few racers make it through the really big net. So just to be in the race in the highest elite category is a great achievement. Together with me, two Czech teams qualified for the intermediate teams (mostly from Crossfit GTPS) and Jiri Formanek qualified for the masters elite. From Slovakia, my colleague from Train2Peak programming - Ema Malatinská made it to the intermediate individuals.
The competition was only for two days and for most of the competitors it consisted of 5 parts, for the best there was a final. All the workouts had very strict time caps, which only the best really managed. This limited the race to sprints only and I think that's a shame. It doesn't really test the long endurance of the athletes and the stronger athletes are definitely at an advantage.
The first workout was 10 rounds for 10 minutes, alternating between muscle-ups on the trapeze and clusters with one heavy kettlebell. Movements between exercises were very important and there was basically no room for rest.
The second workout again consisted of a trapeze, then a runner and snatches where each round the competitor loaded the weight themselves. At the end of the first day, maximum weight was lifted for the squat clean. I should note here how important it is in Crossfit to focus on strength and weightlifting- for the women the ladder ended at 110kg and for the men it was 170kg.
The next day started with a two-part workout- the first was a 400m sprint row, which I managed to win. The second part of the workout involved heavy jump rope work. Once again, I encountered something "next and unexpected" in crossfit and it confirmed to me that you really have to be prepared for anything. Unfortunately, I was not. The last (for me) workout was a sprint ending with legless ropes.
Overall I rate the race very positively and the participation itself is great. Many congratulations to the Czech team from GTPS who managed to win first place in the intermediate category! Also Jiri Formanek took second place in the masters. Ema Malatinská from Slovakia took a great fourth place in the intermediate category.
I would recommend anyone who is serious about crossfit and has high ambitions in this sport to try to get to this race. I've never experienced such an atmosphere anywhere
